Ruling on Using Gold and Silver Utensils for Eating and Drinking
Islamic Ruling:
According to Islamic teachings, it is impermissible and haram (forbidden) to eat or drink from utensils made of gold or silver. While this prohibition is not directly mentioned in the Qur’an, it is clearly established through the authentic sayings (Ahadith) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Hadith Reference:
Narrated by Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"Do not drink from gold and silver vessels, and do not eat in plates made of them. For these are for them (disbelievers) in this world, and for you in the Hereafter."
(Sahih Bukhari: 5633, Sahih Muslim: 2067)
This Hadith clearly prohibits Muslims from using such luxurious utensils as a sign of humility and spiritual discipline.
Scholarly Consensus:
There is unanimous agreement among scholars from all schools of thought that using gold or silver utensils for food or drink is haram. Such use represents pride, extravagance, and worldly ostentation, which contradicts the Islamic values of simplicity and modesty.
Wisdom Behind the Prohibition:
To avoid showing off or worldly display.
To prevent hurting the feelings of the poor.
To promote humility and ethical discipline.
To avoid worldly arrogance and earn reward in the Hereafter.
