The different languages used in Twitter messages, called tweets, were recorded and mapped out in New York City according to where in the city the tweets came from.
The number one language by a large margin was English, followed by Spanish.
34 different languages were recorded among the eight and a half million tweets that were used to compile the data between January 2010 and February 2013.
Manhattan showed the most diversity of languages, with multilingual tweets centered near the Theatre District and Times Square.
The map was generated by Trendsmap, which maps out twitter trends from 120 countries around the world
They display popular words, topics or phrases to show what most people are tweeting about in different parts of the planet.
New York is known for being extremely culturally and ethnically diverse.
Daniel Kaufman, an adjunct professor of linguistics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York said: “It is the capital of language density in the world. We’re sitting in an endangerment hot spot where we are surrounded by languages that are not going to be around even in 20 or 30 years.”
Languages experts estimate that there are up to 800 languages spoken in New York City.
