This week’s long holiday in China drew out millions of visitors to tourist spots around the country. Vacationing turned sour though for more than ten thousand tourists to Huashan Mountain in China’s northwest Shaanxi province. They became trapped on Tuesday, and many had to trek for miles to make it out.
The cold and slippery conditions made the exit difficult for some. On Tuesday evening, calls for help began emerging on China’s microblog. This post says: “There are a lot of elderly and children, there are no street lights, it’s very cold, come and save them.”
Others forwarded the calls for help.
[Chinese netizen]:
“After I saw this I felt it was very serious. Huashan is very steep, and a lot of people can’t get down. I was very worried so I used my microblog account to provide information.”
Local media reported afterwards that shuttles were unable to get up the mountain because tourists asking for refunds refused to leave. But netizens say the blockage was because management could not handle the influx of visitors. Scuffles broke out between agitated tourists and management staff, and police had to be called in.
Ticketing limitations have now been put in place to control the number of visitors in the mountain.
State-run Xinhua reported today more than 6 million visitors have flocked to the country’s 119 scenic spots this year, a 30% increase from last.
