Protesters assault the U.S. embassy in Tunisia, as violent demonstrations leave at least two people dead.

The embassy in the Tunisian capital was ransacked by protesters angry at a film that insults the Prophet Mohammad.

Fires were started inside the compound after protesters forced their way past riot police.

The security forces opened fire to scatter crowds throwing petrol bombs and rocks.

At least 29 people were injured.

One official said the embassy was not staffed during the attack and two U.S. soldiers were reportedly spotted on the roof.

The Tunisian authorities condemned the violence saying it was an attack against a friendly nation.

Anger against the anti-Islamic film has triggered widespread protests across a number of Muslim countries.
