Religious tensions are on the rise in the birthplace of the Arab Spring after a group of Salafis clashed with police in Tunis on Tuesday.

The group was angry about an art exhibition they say insults Muslims.

A work of art that spells out the name of God using insects appears to have caused the most fury.

Debris from a fire-damaged court set alight on Monday night was cleared by Tuesday afternoon.

The streets of Tunis were all but deserted on Tuesday night after ministers imposed a curfew on the Tunisian capital and seven other areas of the country following the clashes.

In a statement released before the protests, Ennahda, the moderate Islamist party that now leads the government, condemned what it described as provocations and insults against religion but urged its own supporters to respond peacefully.
