The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off in Cape Canaveral
It the first commercial flight to the International Space Station and a test of ventures to follow.
After ending its own flights, NASA is relying on privately owned companies like Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, to carry supplies and eventually astronauts to the station.
Russia is currently responsible for ferrying crew members, but the missions carry a price tag of 60 million US dollars per person.
If successful, the capsule is expected to connect with the space station Friday.
