French Socialist candidate Francois Hollande beat incumbent French President Nicolas Sarkozy in the race for presidency on Sunday (May 6).

According to exit polls broadcast on French channel TF1, Hollande received 52 percent of the votes, compared to 48 percent for Sarkozy.

The historic win means that France will have a Socialist President for the first time in nearly two decades.

Conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy, swamped by anger at his failure to rein in rife unemployment and punished too for a personal manner that grated on many, became Europe's 11th leader to be swept out by the economic crisis.
