Bacteria have a sensing mechanism that permits them to coordinate their activities and even join to take over their host.
A red seaweed has no bacteria colonizing its surface. Seaweeds live in the ocean which is a "soup of bacteria". This seaweed deafens the bacteria making it impossible for them to realize where their buddies are or coordinate joint actions. The additional advantage is that they will not mutate and become resistant.
The company Biosignal developed a synthetic imitation of the seaweed's defense, but the introduction of a new molecule requires an enormous registration process. However, the wide field of potential applications secures this innovation will have a future. What about extending the life of freshly cut flowers? What about designing a new deodorant or keeping airconditioners clean and safe? We could one day even imagine a treatment for tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis. This sound like a new business portfolio in the making.
