The United Nations Security Council voted in favour of new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme, that Western powers suspect is aimed at developing atomic weapons.
The Security Council resolution calls for measures against new Iranian banks abroad if a connection to the nuclear programme is suspected.
It also expands a UN arms embargo against Tehran and blacklists firms that are aiding the nuclear enrichment.
The 15-nation council met to vote on a draft resolution that is the product of five months of talks between the US, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia.
European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she was ready to meet Iran's nuclear negotiator to discuss its enrichment programme.
Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's envoy to the UN in Vienna, said: "Nothing will change. The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue uranium enrichment activities."
