In a recent interview, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized that Democrats had no leverage to block the Republican-backed budget bill. He argued that passing the bill was necessary to prevent a government shutdown, which could have led to even more damaging spending cuts by President Trump and his advisers, including Elon Musk.
However, Schumer's decision has sparked backlash from within his own party. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed disappointment over the concessions made by Democrats, while Senator Bernie Sanders criticized the bill’s passage as a sign of weak leadership.
This dissatisfaction led to protests outside Schumer’s Brooklyn home, where around 100 demonstrators demanded his resignation for supporting the Republican budget bill. Organized by the group Indivisible Brooklyn, protesters accused Schumer of a "devastating lack of leadership" and urged him to "stand up or step down."
Despite mounting pressure, Schumer remains firm in his position, stating that his decision was based on principles and aimed at avoiding a potential constitutional crisis. He reaffirmed his commitment to keeping the government running and fighting against what he sees as executive overreach by President Trump.
