Drone views show massive sinkhole swallowing Brazilian town
A north-eastern town in Brazil, declared last week, February 11, a state of public calamity due to severe erosion threatening homes, according to the municipality.
The geological phenomenon affecting Buriticupu is known as "voçorocas" and it has created large craters, some stretching hundreds of meters, advancing toward residential areas.
A technical report by the Municipal Engineering Department highlighted that the problem is worsening during the current intense rainy season. However, "this phenomenon is natural, but human activity intensifies it," said Marcelino Farias, a geographer from the University of Maranhao.
