Fabrizio Bonacchi's Fatal Crash @ Camucia-Cortona 2019 (Aftermath)

The 33rd edition of the Camucia-Cortona hillclimb, scheduled to be contested on Sunday, 07 April 2019 in province of Arezzo, Italy, was called off in sign of mourning, following a fatal accident which happened during Saturday free practice.

About 18h15, Fabrizio Bonacchi, 53-year-old from Agliana, province of Pistoia, was allowed to start a familiarisation run along the course of the hillclimb. He was at the wheel of his Gloria Kit single-seater #53. Less than 700 meters after the start in the village of Camucia, for unknown reason Bonacchi lost control of his car which crashed violently against a tree.

Fabrizio Bonacchi was killed almost instantly, victim of a crushing fracture in the base of the skull. The experienced amateur driver was survived by his wife, Paola and their two children. He was employed by the textile company Pontetorto of Montemurlo, province of Pistoia.

Bonacchi began his career as a karting driver in 1988, winning a 125 class title in the Tuscany Regional Championship, before moving to hillclimb racing. He competed in the CIVSA (Campionato Italiano Velocità Salita Autostoriche) [Italian Historic Hillclimb Speed Championship] since many years, with team Granducato Corse.

Originally a Formula Arcobaleno single-seater, the car Fabrizio Bonacchi was driving was a Gloria B4-ARC Kit, modified by Gloria Smart Race Cars of Cambiano province of Turin, Italy, and fitted with a 1-litre Yamaha motorcycle engine.
