A psychopathic ous accountant who slit the throat of random stranger in shopping mall lived deceptive fantasy life in which he claimed to be decorated soldier. Crooked Nick Boak, 40, claimed to be an SAS veteran who won the Victoria Cross for bravery before launching his brutal attack on Michael Eaton, 51. Mr Eaton was a single father of five who had recently separated from his wife and was an early morning regular at the Cairns Center Shopping Center in northern Queensland. The friendly former dog breeder and car fanatic was unable work due to health reasons but enjoyed chatting store staff before the store opened. But at 8am on a Wednesday morning in September 2021, she was targeted by Boak on ground floor of the mall while Boak was in middle of a psychotic episode. Locals said the accountant, who had recently worked at resorts on Fitzroy Island and Airlie Beach, began shouting erratically at Mr Eaton. Mr Eaton shrugged off the outbursts but Boak suddenly pulled out a knife and sneaked up behind Mr Eaton before slitting his throat without warning or provocation. It left Mr Eaton covered in blood, where he 20 minutes later, drenched in his own blood, despite the best efforts of bystanders and emergency services. Brisbane-born Boak was soon arrested nearby and details of his strange past began to emerge. He was already under investigation by military veterans after bizarrely claiming that he was an SAS hero who took part in action in Korea and won the Victoria Cross. In his application to join the Returned Servicemen's Club of Queensland he said he was a Major who served in Malaysia, Iraq, the Gulf War and Afghanistan. He claimed that he enlisted in military in 2003 and even pretended to be a secret service spy, adopting the 007-style name Nick Bond Industries for one of companies he founded. Boak was instead a mild-mannered accountant and fitness freak who stu at Federation University, based in Ballarat in regional Victoria. He joined the Australian Army Reserves a student, but graduated as an accountant who also worked a personal trainer. He also attended the Royal Military College Duntroon in Canberra with the reserves but there is no record of him seeing any action although he has posed with medals on social media. A month before he launched his brutal attack on Mr Eaton, he had just set up his newest company, Advanced Accounting Australia, while working as an auditor on Fitzroy Island. Boak's lies were exposed by a group of former soldiers who hunted the fake soldiers online to shame them on Facebook.
