特別養子縁組とは、生みの親との親子関係を断ち、子どもの最善の利益のために、育ての親と新しい親子関係を結ぶ縁組です。子どもが生涯に渡り、安定した家庭で特定の大人の愛情に包まれて育つために作られた公的な制度です。
何らかの事情で生みの親が育てることができない子どもを、育ての親に託し、子どもと育ての親は家庭裁判所の審判によって戸籍上も実の親子となることができます。
