National security adviser John Bolton once said Russia's election interference was "truly an act of war" against the US.
He also warned that a policy based on trusting Russia was "doomed to failure."
However, on Wednesday, he told the Russian leader: "We are most appreciative of your courtesy and graciousness."
Bolton's tune changed completely after he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
