5 Experiments that almost ended the world
5. Hadron collider
World's largest and most powerful particle collider, the Large Hadron Collider lies in a 175 meters deep tunnel of 27 km near Geneva, Switzerland. The trials carried out at the collider provoked fears that the particle collisions might produce doomsday phenomena, involving the production of black holes that may engulf the world into an unknown galaxy.
4. Trinity test
The first detonation of a nuclear weapon, Trinity test, conducted by the United States Army on July 16, 1945 resulted about ten times higher residual radiation at the site after more than seventy years.
According to scientists it was theoretically possible that it might ignite the atmosphere due to a self-sustaining nuclear fission.
3. SETI
The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) progressed various projects in searching the universe for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial life. There are many theories and thoughts that strongly recommend the search for alien life may alert a hostile alien race of our existence which might lead to a global attack.
2. Kola superdeep Borehole
A scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union drilled the deepest artificial hole in the world with a total depth of 12,376 meters.
Further penetration to 15,000 meters to achieve the target possibly led to tectonic shifts triggered by unnatural pressure release in the atmosphere.
1. Starfish prime
On July 9, 1962 United States conducted a high-altitude nuclear test, Starfish Prime that discharged an electromagnetic pulse far greater than anticipated which disabled hundreds of streetlights in Hawaii and damaged seven satellites over a months following the test. The unusual amount of radiation due to explosion that took place 250 miles above Johnston Island could have disturbed the currents that make the Earth inhabitable.
