It only took 20 minutes for this wall of smog to engulf Beijing. This time-lapse video, taken by British worker Chas Pope, shows a thick wall of smog descend upon Beijing earlier this week. It only took 20 minutes for the entire city to be blanketed.
Chinese officials declared a red alert — the most severe warning — last month as pollution levels reached hazardous levels. Low visibility has caused hundreds of flight cancellations and highway closures throughout the Chinese capital.
Despite the heavy smog, Beijing officials say the air quality is actually better than last year.
