1. Don't skip breakfast.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It helps you keep your energy levels up in the morning as well as maintains your blood sugar levels. Waiting till lunch to eat after often results in cravings which lead one to eat foods that they really shouldn't be eating if they hope to lose weight.

2. Stay off drinks containing sugar.

This is a big one. Many people are fooled by manufacturers food labels and often think they are drinking something that is good for them when they are not.

Obviously stay away from sodas. Soda's often have 35-40 grams of sugar per 12 oz can. That is 9 -10 teaspoons of sugar!

Also, many sports drinks contain very high levels of sugar. Although not as high as a can of soda, a typical sports drink still has around 20 grams of sugar per 12 oz serving.

Also, If you truly want to lose weight, you have to stay off Margaritas and frozen Daiquiris.

Be careful with diet sodas. They often contain artificial sweeteners that cause you to retain water.

3. Do some form of exercise.

Getting your body moving is an important part of losing weight. But be careful not to go out and overdo it right off the bat.

Choose exercise activities that you like and you will stick with. You can pick up jogging, swimming, dancing, yoga, martial arts, running, weightlifting, climbing, biking, or whatever.

The main thing is that this will create a habit of activity that will stay with you after you lose the weight.

4. Don't go on fad diets.

Every 6 months or so there is a new fad diet that is all the rage. While many of these diets do work initially, most fail in the long run.

It is important to change your eating habits so that you will have long-term success. Develop a habit of making healthy diet choices when you have the chance.

5. Drink plenty of water.

Studies have shown that drinking as little as 17 oz of water a day increases the metabolic rate of healthy men and women by as much as 30%.

In addition, drinking water throughout the day helps give you a feeling of being full, thereby causing you to eat less.

To effectively lose weight always remember that it is just a matter of calories taken in vs calories burned.

Don't get discouraged if you don't lose all of the weight you want in just a month or two. Remember, it took you longer than that to gain it.

But a healthy diet combined with exercise will get you the results you seek.
