Footage of the people of Madukkarai town mourning the death of a rogue elephant that died shortly after it was captured.
The video, filmed on June 19, shows posters paying tribute to the 20-year-old animal who's story has been followed closely by local media for the last nine months or so.
Named by the locals as ‘Madukkarai Maharaj’ and by wildlife enthusiasts as ‘Gentle Giant,’ the elephant had been causing trouble for villagers and farmers for quite some time, but as the posters say, they wanted him relocated, not dead.
This led to Operation Maharaj which saw the angry animal tranquilised by forest officials and relocated.
Unfortunately, on Tuesday evening the "gentle giant" collapsed after ferocious attempts to break open the shackles to free itself from captivity.
