So, my basic strategy starting off is thus:
- Kill zombies with explosive canisters and environmental hazards as much as possible; it's not only an efficient method at this level, but also gives points to both Agility and Power. Make as much noise as you want on the first day, since you don't have to worry about Virals popping up.
- Craft 4 Lacerators ASAP, which last me until I start finding better stuff around Survivor rank 6-7. While they're one step down from the best weapons you can craft at this point, wood planks/table legs/etc. are very easy to come by. Lacerators are also powerful enough that two controlled slashes to a basic zombie's head will kill it (aim a bit over the head to clear their shoulders), and can kill them with one shot using Melee Throw.
- Take advantage of the free (respawning) disaster relief crates SW of Dr. Zere's trailer and at the water works to get a head start on upping my Survivor rank. Since you craft fewer of most items per attempt on Hard, getting to Survivor rank 5 is one of my top priorities.
- Scavenge. A lot. I like to start stockpiling pretty much everything, really; but the things I want the most at this point are blades (for the Lacerators), strings and alcohol (molotovs). I also try to lockpick ambulances as I come across them most of the time, so I eventually have a nice surplus of medkits.
