SAN FRANCISCO — Canary is a home security system that sends users smart notifications, including recorded video clips when unusual motions are detected.
"Everyone wants to make sure that their home is safe and that their family is safe," says Sam Evans, Canary spokesperson. "I think that today with so many kinds of gadgets and the internet, everyone is looking around for smarter alternatives to keep their homes safe."
To distinguish between regular and irregular motions, Canary's algorithm-based motion detector is designed to become smarter over time.
Canary Head of Communications John Carter says there are two ways the system becomes smarter. First, there is unsupervised learning, which consists of machine learning and computer vision. The system interprets large volumes of data from different devices in order to recognize specific patterns, such as differentiating between a person entering a doorway and a spinning ceiling fan. Eventually, the system learns these behaviors. Then, there is supervised learning in which users teach Canary what to care about. Users do this by tagging objects, people, motions and activities in the video timeline in the Canary app. Users control what notifications are sent to them by adjusting the sensitivity setting.
"We announced that we have an integration with Wink, which means you and your Nest can communicate with other smart objects in the home," Evans said, referring to the partnership announced in October.
Canary costs $199 and is equipped with a wide-angle lens. The device also monitors air quality and allows users to connect with local police.
