The New York Jets called an illegal timeout to nullify their own game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter Sunday and ended up losing to the Green Bay Packers.
In the fourth quarter, down 24-31, Geno Smith on 4th and 4 connected on a perfect pass to Jeremy Kerley in the endzone to tie the game. Only problem, the official waved it off and said the Jets called timeout before the ball was snapped.
Coach Rex Ryan, who is the only coach on the sideline that can call a timeout, said he didn’t call the timeout. The official had his back towards the Jets’ sideline when offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg ran towards Ryan yelling for him to call a timeout. That’s when defensive linemen Sheldon Richardson walked up to the official and whispered in his ear “timeout” causing the official to wave his hands and kill the play.
The touchdown was nullified. The Jets ended up converting the 4th down play, but were unable to convert. The Packers ran out the clock and won the game 31-24.
