Just because it’s policy doesn’t mean it’s right, says Cliff Autrey, who witnessed a disagreement between a US Airways flight attendant and Army Ranger First Sergeant Albert Marle on board a redeye flight from Portland, Oregon to Charlotte on October 9.
Sergeant Marle was about to take his seat aboard the plane when he asked the flight attendant if he could hang his highly decorated Class A uniform jacket somewhere where it wouldn’t get wrinkled. The flight attendant stated that she couldn’t hang it in the closet, citing company policy that the closet was for first class passengers only.
A few first class passengers heard this, including Charlotte resident Cliff Autrey, who volunteered to exchange seats. Sergeant Marle, however, refused. The matter was resolved when another passenger in first class simply went and took Sergeant Marle’s jacket and hung it up behind his seat.
As you can imagine, the internet has gone crazy with comments, opinions and other choice words being hurled at US Airways and the flight attendant. US Airways and its parent, American Airlines, have both issued apologies and are conducting an internal review aimed at changing the policy and educating staff on how to handle situations like this in the future.
