Compass Connected To Blind Rats’ Brains Helps Them ‘See’

According to new research, blind rats who had a compass-integrated device attached to their brains were able to navigate a maze course as well as rats who could see.

Lack of sight in animals and even humans could possibly be compensated for with the help of artificial sensors. 


According to a recent study, blind rats showed the ability to take cues from a compass connected to their brains in order to navigate a maze. 


In the experiment, scientists developed headgear consisting of a geomagnetic compass, like the kind in smartphones, and two microelectrodes that were surgically implanted in the visual cortex of the rats’ brains, and their eyelids sutured. 


The device gave them an allocentric sense which is knowledge of t
