The crisis in Ukraine has dominated talks between the US Vice President and top EU officials.
Joe Biden’s visit to Europe comes as the US considers whether to provide weapons to Ukraine in its conflict with pro-Russian separatists.
How to boost security and financial aid to Kyiv, and put further pressure on Russia, has also been discussed.
Biden said: “This is a moment where the United States and Europe must stand together, stand firm.
“Russia cannot be allowed to redraw the map of
Europe, because that’s exactly what they are doing.”
Donald Tusk, the European Council President and former Polish Prime Minister, said: “We cannot compromise on Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The EU remains fully committed to continue giving support to the Ukrainians, helping then to reform the country and become a modern, prosperous and democratic society.”
Biden will also be attending the Munich Security Conference, where he is expected to meet the Ukrainia
