A moment of silence for two New York City police officers shot dead over the weekend:
40-year-old Rafael Ramos and 32-year-old Wenjian Liu.
They were ambushed by Ismaaiyl Brinsley as they sat in a patrol car in broad daylight.
The gunman then killed himself.
The incident came after weeks of anti-police protests in the city over the killings of unarmed black men by white police officers.
At City Hall, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, accompanied by his wife Chirlane McCray, says society must try to overcome its divisions.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW YORK CITY MAYOR BILL DE BLASIO:
"We have to keep working to bring police and community closer together."
Just one day ago, after meeting the families of Ramos and Liu, de Blasio called for a pause on protests until after their funerals.
