The explanation offered by Colombian General Ruben Dario Alzate as to what he was doing in rebel held territory, out of uniform, and without backing has sparked different reactions among Colombians. Some feel that while the explanation is weak and raises other questions, it should not been used to derail the peace process. Alzate -who has since resigned- says he was involved in a social project and did not wear his uniform due to mistrust of the army among the local population.
