PhD student Andrew was keen to see “the inside of an industrial irradiator that uses a particle accelerator to irradiate samples with a high energy electron beam”. As radiation levels present where the beam hits the samples are so high it would be lethal for a person to directly observe the process, a radiation-shielded GoPro camera was sent through the irradiator instead.
