The day and night
Dancing with each other,
Can they live without one another?
Are they married
And one is just hiding behind the other?
Can you live without Goodness, Evil?
And Goodness,
Can you be as good without Evil?
Do you ennoble one another,
Do you work together,
Do you conspire,
Do you fool us
Into thinking you are separate?
Are you both there when I watch the soldier
Struggling with blood in his throat?
Were you both there when my dog died,
And in those speeches Hitler wrote?
Are you both dining and dancing,
Lurking in the hearts of all men?
And are you there when I fall in love
And out again?
Are you lights from the same sun,
Are your roots in the same soil,
Petals of the same flower?
Are you fruits from the same tree,
Just one of you sweet
And the next sour.
Are you features of the same face?
Are you the same mouth
But one of you a smile
And the next a sneer?
Are you the same eyes
But one of you a glint
And the next a leer?
Are you the same voice
But one of you a hiss
And the next a sweet hum?
And is a wink from that face
A flash of mischief to come?
