Rumors are circulating that a US airline is working on a new passenger seating option they’re calling Economy Minus.
The news originally surfaced on the aviation site Runway Girl Network and is said to have come from an off the record discussion with the airline at a recent aviation event.
Details on the possible new class are few, but it’s reported that it could be added on as a 4th option.
Plans appear to involve keeping with the traditional front-to-back tier layout and sticking the new, more crowded seats in the back.
It would also result in the offering of three economy distinctions – enhanced, regular, and minus.
The distance between seats known as the seat pitch, seems to be a defining factor between them.
Top level economy passengers would enjoy a range of 35 to 38 inches, regular passengers a less generous 30 to 31, and the bottom rung would be left to work with 30 inches or less.
It has been pointed out that many airlines are already doing this sort of thing, they’re just not talking about it in the same way.
Also mentioned is that the information may have been leaked as a sort of fishing expedition to gather and gauge reactions.
