At a South African park, a little genet is making experts scratch their heads.

The creature, which is related to a mongoose, seems to have quite a fondness for large herbivores, particularly rhinos and buffalos.

Now conservationists are left wondering why the genet is so attracted to hopping onto the backs of the massive animals. The conservation group WildlifeAct was the first to witness what is going on.

The organization installed camera traps inside the park to keep an eye on endangered black rhinos. What staffers didn’t except to see was a tiny genet hitching rides on the backs of rhinos and similarly sized animals on a nightly basis.

Wildlife ACT noted “It seems like this lonely genet has tried to make friends outside of his species. It’s just he/she only seems to like really large herbivore type friends.”

Prior to this discovery, the conservationists had never seen a genet do such a thing. Fortunately for the genet, many of its huge companions have calmly allowed it to ride piggyback style.
