Armed with a surveillance-detecting GSMK CryptoPhone, an executive with mobile security company Integricell, traveled the streets of Washington DC and discovered a significant amount of spying activity.

Over a dozen surveillance alerts went off in the areas surrounding the Senate and the White House alone.

The detection device works by searching for connection interceptors that trick the phone into giving unauthorized access to both itself and the information available to it.

There are two primary kinds of interceptors. One can capture and catalog the phone user’s account info and the other is capable of listening in on calls. Some systems use both.

They’re often small, portable, and tend to be a relatively inexpensive means of spying.

The gadgets aren’t typically associated with US government agencies as such entities usually have the means of conducting surveillance directly through carriers.

Having ruled out that the interceptor use was the doing of American officials, Les Goldsmith, CEO of ESD America who is marketing the CryptoPhone with Integricell, said that they were most likely the work of ‘foreign entities’.

Goldsmith also noted that during a day-and-a-half drive around the city there were 15 instances of rogue surveillance activity detected.
