Bulgaria’s prime minister has said work will not resume on the Russian-led South Steam gas pipeline until clearance is received from the European Commission.
The US and the EU are concerned by Bulgaria’s choice of a Russian consortium to build its section of the project.
Bulgaria’s decision could inflame tensions between Russia and the EU.
The 28-nation bloc’s executive arm last week asked the Balkan country to suspend work on the project pending a decision on whether it complies with EU law.
