The aftermath of a deadly protest in Central African Republic.

A crowd gathered in front of the United Nations base on Friday, demanding the departure of Burundi troops.

At least two protesters are confirmed dead.

A spokesman for the peacekeeping mission said Burundian troops returned fire after being shot at.

But protesters say they were unarmed:

"We got together this morning here, women, children, all unarmed, and here the Burundi troops have killed five people here. We were in the offices of the U.N. explaining things, and they shoot on us, they injure us. Is this what the people's expression should be like? Central African Republic is for Central Africans."

Tensions are high as the interim government and some 8,000 French peacekeepers have not yet secured peace in the country.

Anger has escalated sharply after three Muslim youths were killed and mutilated on Sunday.
