The 800 year old remains of a medieval monk believed to be in his 20s at the time of death, have been found in a former burial ground located in South Wales, with the thigh bones sticking out of the side of a cliff.

Other parts of the body like the monk’s knees, shins, and feet were reportedly missing from the site.

Erosion caused by recent storms in the area uncovered the bones, and a woman who noticed them sticking out of the ground took a picture and sent it to coastal archaeologist Karl-James Langford for analysis.

Langford is quoted as saying: “You can clearly see a grave has been eroded into the sea. What is fascinating is you can see the two femurs being slowly revealed as the cliffs are eroded away.”

The remains of human bones were first found around this area of South Wales in 1982, and several graves have been discovered since.

It is believed to be an unofficial burial ground for Cistercian monks at Monknash in the Middle Ages.
