According to Google, a map image is scheduled to be replaced after it was discovered that the body of a murdered teenager could be seen in the photo. Jose Barrera, from Richmond, California contacted Google to complain after he discovered the map containing the image of his slain 14-year-old son Kevin who had been shot near some local railroad tracks.
Kevin’s body was found in August of 2009. The suspect responsible for the shooting had not yet been identified, adding to the family’s heartache.
The vice president of Google maps, Brian McClendon sympathized with the distraught father. McClendon stated “Our hearts go out to the family of this young boy. Google has never accelerated the replacement of updated satellite imagery from our maps before, but given the circumstances we wanted to make an exception in this case."
Jose, who said the image is drudging up horrible memories, isn’t happy with Google’s apology and promise. He believed the photo never should have made it online in the first place, but he’s hoping the recent publicity will put additional pressure on local investigators to solve his son’s murder.
