How to escape from a car in water

Following the recent collapse of the I-5 bridge in Washington State, which plunged two vehicles into the water escaping from a submerged vehicle has become a useful skill to know.

Instead of reaching for your cellphone it is important to make exiting the vehicle a priority. The first step is to unbuckle your seat belt.

Then, instead of opening the car door and sending tons of water into the vehicle, the wisest thing to do is roll down your windows.

If your car has electric windows, they will likely short circuit before you can get them open. There are tools available that you should have in reach to shatter the windows. Make sure you have these within reach at all times.

If there are children in the car, unbuckle their seatbelts. With the windows down, grab any children, or those who need help and help them out of the window, hopefully into the arms of another passenger.
