To satisfy the personal essay requirement, Tufts University is asking hopeful Jumbos to wax philosophical about what YOLO means to them.
Tufts University is asking the hopefuls to wax philosophical about what YOLO means to them.
The college admissions essay is, for many, the most intimidating and fear-inducing writing assignment ever undertaken.
It’s one thing to get a rejection letter because of your grades or test scores, but knowing you could be dinged on the basis of who you are and what you feel can unearth a whole new level of neurosis.
Hard to say if Tufts University’s super-hip new topic option will ease any anxieties.
In its entirety, the essay option reads:
"The ancient Romans started it when they coined the phrase "Carpe diem." Jonathan Larson proclaimed "No day but today!" and most recently, Drake explained You Only Live Once. Have you ever seized the day? Lived like there was no tomorrow? Or perhaps you plan to shout YOLO while jumping into something in the future. What does #YOLO mean to you?"
Applicants who prefer the classics to popular culture can opt to explore the meaning of a Virginia Woolf quote. For that one, in addition to the traditional written word approach, the University will also accept slam poetry, blogs, and video as mediums.
