I shove large posters through a shredder, in order to cut them into strips. I use the shredder to cut the posters vertically, while cutting the to be weaved-in elements length-wise. I am re-inventing the loom; researching weaving patterns from clothing, carbon fiber chassis from the auto industry, and other possibilities presented in tapestry. Large format paper posters from the fashion industry, so-called “citylightposters” such as the ones used at back-lit bus stop and subway advertisements are my raw materials. I stretch the weaving process into the visual. What appears, when I weave the image of a hand with itself? when I re-weave a woven dress? will the model’s hair wave in the wind of the weave? The 6 minute film, made from 8 “citylightposters”, weaving alike with alike, creating a digital interference tapestry. The film’s movements layer into the mechanical depths of the weaving process. It perforates, pixelates, de- and re-constructs the image into interferences that result in a 1.6 x 2.2 m paper tapestry. The film itself becomes a mechanized loom. It dissects the image surface into 6 mm moving pixels, questioning the industrial rhythm, face and body, in filmic space. I have succeeded in creating an animation, which itself is its own subject. The film shows its own process as a rapid weaving, putting to task, with invisible hands, the rhythm of digital and analog imaging.
