No band in 2009 comes loaded with a host of Great Songs quite like Los Angeles California's Greenhouse Effect, a three piece band that actually disbanded in November 1992 ! Today's internet technology and the 'video boom craze' for bands has brought G.e. back from the DEAD...ALL THE WAY BACK !! AS IN, now, Greenhouse Effect is one of GoogleVideocom's most surfed and downloaded bands ! with their seemingly endless collection of videos... "Our bass player quit in 92' " says Clark Hagins today in March 2009 "I never thought that I would play music ever again,..but now, me and a couple of guys from the G.e. days are tryin' to plan some 'comeback" shows - although it would be tough that now I am 44 years old,..we are all way too old now" says Haggins... In the summer of 1991, G.e. rocked the "South Bay" area communities (Redondo Beach and Torrance California) with their power-packed grunge rock anthem "A White Black Song" which Haggins said he had to record after the televised beating of Rodney G. King in May of 1991. "That song was actually written way back in 1989 and I made one of my 'home-demo's" of it at my house at 251 in Torrance" says Higgins "I played the song to Guitarist Phil Keegan (Dr. Phil) of our band and he said it was 'silly' - that it sounded like the Smithereens,...i also played it to Ted and he thought it was pretty Lame ,..so i shelved that idea,....then in the summer of 1991 came the beating of Rodney King by the Los Angeles Police,...by that time, Flipper was out of the band and me and Ted had recently recorded the "Going Legit" cd with Andrew Houston in Harbor City California,...I aimed for a bigger sound so I went to Pendragon Studios in Redondo Beach and began working on a more 'professional" version of 'White Black' with Producer Bill krodel,...Billy told me that he was more-a-less 'permenantly' now working at Jet City Studios in El Segundo California with another engineer named Mark Nathanson ,...so we started laying the song idea down there in like July of 1991,...money was very tight for me,..i had to move quick - so the ENTIRE SONG was literally recorded in under 15 minutes with me over-dubbing ALL of the instruments,....the studio was like really heavily booked up with lotsa' other bands so it took a couple of months of me coming back to the studio to finish the track,...by early September of 1991,..the song was done and when me and Billy listened to it,..he was like "What the fuck 'is' this ??? - this is the weirdest damn thing i've ever heard - but it really rocks !!",...it was just a rough mix and i said "tweak it Billy,..lets get it done !!" so Billy put the finishing touches on it,..we made like these cheesey HUGE SOUNDING POUNDING DRUMS and we turned up the distorted guitar tracks all the way up in like a silly 'over-done' way,..we were laughing our asses of i remember,....Billy had been working with a band called Sensefield who i think used to be called "Reason to believe" and he was like "lets take a ridiculous dance pop song and put some big guitars in it,..it was really wild !!,....when we listened to the complete finished product, we were just blown away at how 'revolutionary' that 'White Black' really was,..i remember Billy saying that we took dance disco alternative rock into some weird place and direction he had never seen before - we like put it 'back into a garage' somehow - yet it was bright and poppy !,...but then Billy began to say that these lyrics are gonna piss off alot of White People Shark and i was like 'yeah',..thats the idea !! My brother Doug hung out with these Torrance racists who lived down near El Retiro Park and some who lived over behind McCormicks Mortuary,...so i was trying to write a song to frustrate and piss them off,..and it worked to perfection,...but then Billy was like "Clark,..this song is gonna piss off EVERYBODY!" - HE WAS LIKE TOTALLY COMPLETELY CONFUSED ,...,..So i just shelved the idea,...I played the song to my brothers Jeff and Paul and they were like blown away !! They couldn't believe how great this fucking song was and yet how it was so catchy and poppy too ! i remember my brother Jeff was like "This is weird but like you can't say that,?? huh ??.." and he was quite confused too obviously... - much just like Billy Krodel was ,..back at the studio,...i took the song down to Goboy records in Redondo and they were like stunned,..and they were like; "Hey Clark ,..you should sell this song RIGHT NOW,...WE WILL PLAY THIS THING OVER OUR sound system,"....and i was like "hey,..i got 20 copies already printed up and better yet,..i'll go get my whole PA SYSTEM !!" AND SO in like late August 91' or early September, Goboy Records began to sell "White Black Thang" as it was then called,....we sold all 20 tapes in like two hours flat ! THEY WERE GONE !! BUT THEN, the record store told me they weren't so sure about this song,...even though it was 'clearly working" as an idea,...ofcourse there were four other songs too on the tape; Manipulation, Subdue, Please Please me, and i think 'Ben is dead" a live version recorded at Wilson Park with Greg Tarpley on drums,...i , myself, thought that the song was way too commercial for G.e. and the lyrics did infact make me nervous so i put out a version of the new four song demo but i edited out the Great "White Black Thang" !! THEN - ALL OF A SUDDEN IN LIKE OCTOBER OF 91',...some band called Nirvana started blowing up all over the media,...atfirst, when i heard them,..i just thought that they were boring ,..ya know ,..stupid,..like alot of that Flipside Magazine kind of punk music but i thought it strange how they slowed down their beats into 'dance songs',..and i realised that perhaps Billy Krodel had heard alot of bands like this lately and thats why he was encouraging 'me' to slow down G.e. and not make every song sound like "Waiting for your love to fail",...over late 1991 and the first part of 1992, those were frustrating sad times ,..because alternative rock was just blowing up but G.e. were still like this little tiny 'project' spinning round n round,...we played some great gigs in their with drummer Marty Silva and we thought about doing a studio version of 'Winers Diners, and Social climbers" and renaming it "Winers, Diners and SOCAL climbers" (Laughs)" THEN,...SUDDENLY came that day that the Rodney King Verdict was announced and the city burned to the ground,..it was scarey that day because i happened to be driving home alone on La Cienaga Blvd. near West Los Angeles- i was driving home from mowing lawns in Bel Air,..i'll never forget there was some van behind me acting strangely out in traffic,..and i was like 'what the hell is wrong with this guy??",..When i got home to Redondo, i noticed the sky had turned black and they were showing some video of all these black people beating some white guy and i asked my nephew Hagan "dude what the hell is going on here ???" and he was like "I don't know dude".....Someone then told me that the blacks were rioting because they had announced that the cops who beat him {Rodney King} were 'innocent' and i was like 'OH MY GOD,...THAT AIN'T COOL AND THAT AIN'T RIGHT - but they shouldn't be doing 'this' - they're gonna kill people !!",..and thats when i realised they coulda' KILLED ME !!" A few days later,...they had Rodney King himself on the news and he was like "This ain't right ,..we're all stuck here" -and i'll never forget i was like 'FUCK - THATS MY SONG',.....and i was like "Fuck it,...'thats' a message from God Almighty Himself !!" ,..and i went straight back to Goboy Records in Redondo and we did the same thing all over again,...with the loud speakers and everything and 'that' time i was like; I DON'T GIVE A FUCK !! I'M PUTTIN' OUT MY SONG !! We were all laughing,..it was just so ironic...and weird " It was so strange because the song was nearly then a year old,..that had just been sitting around 251 and waiting for its moment,..but i had planned to actually 'never' release it,....again - In 2009, Greenhouse Effect come armed with a plethauro of great songs ,..all from 1992 and before ,..bassist Rick Carmody plays on no 1992 Greenhouse Effect songs except for maybe 1991's 'White Black Thang' and Brandy from early 1992 which celebrates it's 17th birthday in march of 2009 !! Misogynistia, No Takers, Big Teen Dollar$, and Search and Destroy are just some of the catchy G.e. collection - much of it coming from the 'Agenda' cd and Late 1992's final G.e. album 'BIG TEEN DOLLAR$'.... BASSIST RICK CARMODY officially exited G.e. for good in November of 1992 as he became a full time member of Redondo Beach's One handed Readers,....Clark hagins himself actually jammed for fun one time with Carmody and the Readers at a garage in North Redondo possibly in early 1993 or 94.
