DĒVARA PADAVA NUTISU Text: Abijah Samuel (1837-1879) Melody: Indian Traditional, Although B. Rice in his KĪRTANEGAḶU manuscript from about 1898 provides one melody which has a lot of characteristics in common with this tune, the first known notation of DĒVARA PADAVA NUTISU was made by V.J. Samuel in his 'Kannada Lyrics', Belgaum 1956. From his handwritten manuscript this version presented by Paul and Salome Shindhe, recorded in Kassel 2011, differs a little, but both versions are but variations of the same tune. "Rev. Abijah Samuel (1837-1879) was one of the first fruits of the Wesleyan Theological Institutions of those days in Bangalore. His ministered labours were divided between Bangalore and the city of Mysore. He was a master of both Tamil and Kannada and had a fair knowledge of English and Hindustani. He made valuable contributions to Kannada literature, especially in the composition of lyrics adopted to Carnatic music. Many of those have received widespread popularity. He was a powerful preacher both to Christian congregations and non-Christians." - quoted from: Masihi Sangeet. Christian Lyrics of India, 1961, page 27
